1ST AND 2ND PLACE AWARDS.

Hello Coaches,

I want to thank you for volunteering your time, energy, and love for the game, and being a positive role model for our youth.

Two years in a row, we have brought in a record number of brand-new referees. More important, we are retaining referees. Last year, we had 17 graduating seniors on our referee team. 12 of them worked regularly for FWYSA. This year, we will have 22 graduating seniors – about 15 of them are regulars for us. Many of them started when they were 13. They are not giving up. They are staying with the referee program. They stay because it’s an awesome opportunity to make money doing something that is challenging, very rewarding when all goes well.

40 and counting new people have joined the FWYSA referee program since July 18th. Most of them are the average age of a referee – 13-14 years old. We are getting a lot more adults in the program. Word is out that if you want to have fun, be provided with mentoring and opportunities to make money – referee for Fort Worth Youth Soccer.

THANK YOU for being awesome coaches. Not only do you coach to win, to enjoy the game, to promote awesome sportsmanship but you have clearly communicated to your parents, players – respect the referees.

Thank you for allowing me and my mentors to coach our referees.

I continue to welcome any feedback that can provide me insight into areas where I need to coach on.

Always include – date, time, venue, field #, your team’s name. Provide specifics of what I need to coach on and I follow up with the referee(s).
I look forward to a great fall 2026 season.

Hello Wonderful Coaches,

Thank you for volunteering your time and energy to coach the kids. Thank you for setting a great example in sportsmanship and leading so many of the youth in the community.

Please know that I am the primary coach of the referees for FT Worth Youth Soccer. I, like you, give lots of time to developing our team of referees. I have a team of mentors (age range 14 +) that help me work with our newest referees. These mentors are good with people, set a solid example and love refereeing.

We have added many brand-new referees to the FT Worth referee roster. It is our goal to RETAIN every referee that meets our criteria of high standards – works hard, is teachable and reliable. Our goal is to get them on the fields ASAP on entry level games with a mentor(s). When they get off to a FUN start and getting game assignments consecutive weekends – this helps them stay in the program.

I hold the referees to high standards setting a high bar of expectations for those working FT Worth games. We expect: 100% work ethic, a positive attitude, to be reliable, prepared, and professional in appearance and attitude. We expect them to show up on time, know their schedule and be able to work well with others. We expect they will make mistakes – it is a given. We tell them, relax, give us your best and if you are teachable from game one and show steady improvement, bring the other characteristics – you will get games for FT Worth Soccer.

We set a high standard, spell out our expectations with the goal of building our amazing team of referees. Set the bar high – people will rise to the challenge.

We have an amazing team of referees that serve the FT Worth games.

Can you help us with one thing please?

Please help us by reminding your parents/spectators what their role is – make it real clear, it is not to interfere with the referee(s).

Remind them, referees are doing their best. Referees will make mistakes (not intentionally) and that is part of the game. The longer they stay in the program, the better they will get.

New referees assume that coaches and parents know the laws, and the modified youth rules of the game. When comments (correct/incorrect) are made from a coach/fan, our younger referees are easily swayed. They are not equipped to handle interference.

Every weekend, we see the fields lined with hundreds of AWESOME fans. We also see and hear fans inserting themselves into the game in a manner that is not helpful to the referee, thus the game. I often hear spectators count the number of “missed” handballs. I see some coaches, spectators walk towards an Assistant Referee (AR) in a quick, intimidating pace, and sometimes politely. Asking, “weren’t they offside?” OR “what did the referee just call?” OR dispute a re-start decision. Polite or not, it’s not helpful because 95% are not equipped to handle any “extra” outside interference. They are doing their best to work with a crew member, make correct re-start decisions, displaying proper mechanics and recognizing fouls. The newest referee is sometimes just wanting to “make it through” the game.

For most referees, this their first job. We are teaching job skills, people skills and confident body language in 60-minute intervals. We can effectively teach for what happens ON the field – fouls, positioning, movement, re-starts, etc. Please remind your parents, assistant coaches to not ask for explanations or call out contradicting commentaries.

Remind everyone associated with your team that our youngest, newest referees need an environment that is free from outside interference.

I have attached a word doc with some helpful clarifications on Substitutions, jewelry, handballs, offside and throw-ins. 5 areas that bring on the most frequent comments.

I enjoy what I do. I give you my best and take pride in the referees working FT Worth Youth games. We are very fortunate to have an incredible team of “experienced” referees that referee for us and help mentor new referees.

All referees will give you their absolute best, they will make mistakes and if they are teachable and work hard, show up on time and continually get better, they will referee for FT Worth Youth Soccer.

Thank you for ensuring a great environment for your players, our referees and everyone that watches the game.

Have a great Spring season.

FWYSA New Policy – Fall 2026

Please Respect Our Referees and FWYSA Staff

FWYSA is committed to providing a positive, safe, and respectful environment for all players, referees, coaches, volunteers, and families.

Effective Fall 2026:

If a referee requests that a coach have a parent or spectator leave the game due to inappropriate behavior, the player associated with that parent or spectator must also leave the game at that time.

  • The parent/spectator will receive a minimum one-game suspension.
  • A $75.00 fine will be assessed to the parent/spectator.
  • The player will not be suspended and will be eligible to participate in the team’s next scheduled game.
  • The $75.00 fine must be paid before the team’s next game. Failure to pay the fine may result in additional sanctions.

We ask all parents and spectators to set a positive example by displaying good sportsmanship, respecting our referees, supporting all players, and helping create an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Thank you for helping make FWYSA a positive place to play, learn, and grow.

FWYSA Parent Monitor Responsibilities

To help ensure a safe, organized, and enjoyable game-day experience, each team must provide one Parent Monitor for every game.

Parent Monitor Duties

  • The Parent Monitor will be stationed on the sideline near the team’s coach throughout the game.
  • The Parent Monitor must have a cell phone available during the match.
  • FWYSA will provide a dedicated Ring Central phone number. The number will include:
    • An extension for Benbrook Soccer Complex
    • An extension for Westside Soccer Complex
  • Parent Monitors should save the Grasshopper number in their phone for quick access.
  • If assistance is needed, the Parent Monitor can call or text the Grasshopper number with:
    • The field number
    • A brief description of the issue
  • Messages will be received by a staff member, who will immediately relay the information to the appropriate field staff.

Parent Monitor Responsibilities Include

  • Helping maintain a positive and respectful sideline environment.
  • Politely reminding coaches, players, and spectators that no warm-ups are permitted inside the 18-yard box (goal box). This helps protect the goal areas from excessive wear and keeps the fields in the best possible condition throughout the season.
  • Notifying FWYSA staff of any disturbances, safety concerns, or unsportsmanlike behavior.
  • Contacting staff immediately if a referee requests assistance.
  • Serving as the primary point of communication between the field and FWYSA staff when issues arise.

Parent Monitors play an important role in helping provide a safe, respectful, and enjoyable environment for all players, coaches, referees, and families. Thank you for volunteering and supporting FWYSA!

To all our FWYSA and Outside Teams, we wanted you to be aware of a new league policy. Recently there have been way too many incidents around North Texas Soccer involving abusive behavior toward referees. It is especially disturbing when directed toward younger referees who are simply trying to learn their trade just as the young players are.

We have had a few break-ins this weekend please make sure you put all valuables out of sight. The thieves are looking for things left out and also if they see a woman without a purse they go back to their car and look. We have contacted the police and asked for more drive-thrus but it starts with being smart HIDE them away!

Hello Coaches,

I want to thank you for volunteering your time, energy, and love for the game, and being a positive role model for our youth.

Since July 13, we have added 31 brand new referees to our referee team and more are completing the 2-part referee course, bringing our number of new referees to 38. This is unheard of.

I serve as a volunteer for North Texas Soccer Referee Program. I help thousands of people navigate the process to become a referee. I have access to the data, the numbers of every association, how referees they retain, how many they recruit.

This number of 38 new people, most of them are the average age of a referee – 13-14 years old. Word is out that if you want to have fun, be provided with mentoring and opportunities to make money – referee for Fort Worth Youth Soccer.

This happens because of the welcoming environment of Fort Worth Youth Soccer. This happens because we have a hands on, all volunteer board with the common goal – provide a solid, fun experience for all that sign up, this includes our referees.

Please use these 2 helpful documents, share them with your parents. These 2 documents have had the desired effect in our program.

Green is in the Mail

You will see from week one our younger, brand-new referees wearing a green badge. ALL referees from here on out that are 17 and younger will be given a green badge. Please note, we have at least one hundred younger referees that have their 2025 badges. When they recertify for 2026, US Soccer will send them a green badge.

A message from US Soccer – As part of our Respect the Call campaign, 2026 referee badges — including the new Green Badge for referees under 18 — are now on their way to all our states! This visible symbol is a reminder to support and protect our youngest officials. You play a key role in sharing this message and creating a positive environment for youth in refereeing. Here is a letter from Kari Seitz, the implementation of this program, also available here.

I look forward to a fantastic fall 2025 season.
